Langtang Tamang Heritage Trek

11 Days 10 Nights

The Langtang Tamang Heritage Trek is a newly opened route in the Langtang region, developed under the Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program (RPAP). This off-the-beaten-path trek offers a unique chance to explore the rich culture of the Tamang people while enjoying breathtaking natural scenery.

This trek provides an intimate look at the Tamang way of life, closely linked to Tibetan civilization. Most Tamangs are farmers or traders, and walking through their villages offers a glimpse into their daily routines, traditions, and rituals. Along the way, you’ll pass lush forests teeming with wildlife, vibrant rhododendron blooms in season, green meadows, cascading waterfalls, and sacred lakes such as Gosai Kunda and Bhirab Kunda.

Your adventure begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubensi, followed by a trek to Gatlang, a hillside village surrounded by terraced fields. Here, you can visit the local Tamang monastery and the sacred Parvati Kunda Lake.

Next, the trek continues to Tatopani, known for its natural hot springs, believed by locals to have healing powers. From Tatopani, you’ll move to Thuman, a village famous for its open grasslands, Himalayan views, and traditional shamanic practices.

Following the old trade route to Tibet, you will reach Briddim, a close-knit Tamang community just three hours from Tibet. Visit the Dukchu Gompa (monastery) and experience local life before continuing along the classic Langtang Valley route to Lama Hotel. The trek passes through dense jungles, where sightings of red pandas are possible.

From Lama Hotel, you’ll trek along the riverbanks, cross the army check post at Ghoda Tabela, and pass through Chyamiki Village to reach Langtang Village, another Tamang settlement.

The journey continues to Kyanjin Gompa, passing small plateaus, yak pastures, and villages. An extra day is reserved to explore Kyanjin Gompa, where you can visit monasteries, a local cheese factory, or climb Tserko Ri Viewpoint for spectacular views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m) and Langtang II (6,586m).
