Permits for Treks and Expeditions in Nepal

  1. Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card
Mandatory for all foreign trekkers to monitor routes and ensure safety. As of April 2023, solo trekking without a licensed guide is not allowed. TIMS cards must be obtained through a registered trekking agency.

  2. National Park and Conservation Area Permits
Required for trekking through regions like Sagarmatha, Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu. Fees support wildlife, forests, and local communities. All trekkers must carry permits at all times.

  3. Restricted Area Permits (RAP)
Needed for remote or border regions like Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, and Manaslu. Requires a licensed guide and minimum group size. Fees vary by region and duration.

  4. Expedition and Peak Climbing Permits
Climbing any peak requires permits from the Department of Tourism (above 7,000m) or Nepal Mountaineering Association (below 7,000m). Fees vary by height, season, and mountain.

  5. Garbage Deposit and Environmental Regulations
All climbing expeditions must submit a refundable garbage deposit to ensure proper waste management. Everest climbers must carry down at least 8 kg of solid waste.
