Overview

Until 1992, Mustang remained largely isolated. Originally part of the Tibetan Empire, it became an independent kingdom in the 14th century under King Ame Pal, with the walled city of Lo-Manthang as its capital. For centuries, it served as a vital trading post between Nepal and Tibet, exchanging wool, salt, and other mountain goods. Mustang was also a refuge for Tibetan exiles and a center of Tibetan resistance during the Cold War, opening only gradually to outsiders in the late 20th century while carefully preserving its cultural heritage through strict permissions and controlled access.

The royal Lo-Manthang dynasty, with nearly 700 years of history, has been central to maintaining Mustang’s Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Even after Nepal abolished its monarchy in 2008, the Mustang royals retained local respect and ceremonial influence. Their palaces, community leadership, and support of monasteries have helped safeguard ancient customs, festivals, and monastic life, making Mustang a deeply spiritual and culturally rich destination.
